Deep red in the glass. Aromas of cherry, cinnamon and hints of vanilla on the nose. The palate is full bodied and complex with flavours of fresh red fruit, and savoury spices finishing with matured, smooth tannins.

WINEMAKING

Predominantly Shiraz (40%) in combination with Pinotage, Carignan, Mouvedre, Tannat, Durif and Grenache

The grapes were hand-harvested, destalked and lightly crushed, where after it was fermented in open top fermenters. Manual punch downs were done during fermentation. The wines were then racked off the skins and sent to barrel for malolactic fermentation and further ageing. Each wine component for the blend was matured in French and American oak for 24 months before blending and bottling.

STORY

The Dreyer family has farmed on this land since 1705. Willie, the present generation Dreyer farmer, has an intimate knowledge of dry land farming. Unirrigated bush vines battle through large, flat, grey shale stone. The roots must claw their way deep beneath the rock in search of moisture and nutrients.

The six Mediterranean / old word varieties were grown in the Swartland region and dry land farmed with small yields and lots of concentration. The seventh, Pinotage, was grown a little north of the Swartland in Piekenierskloof, which is cooler and much higher in altitude than the Swartland. The diversity of the vineyards and soil profiles add to the complexity of the final blend.
